What I Get Paid the Medium Bucks For

Sometimes, particularly this time of year I wonder why the heck I keep this job.  Seriously, it is very stressful this time of year particularly because we have been in a cycle of retrenchment due to the financial climate.  We are tuition driven and when people have a similar (not the same, we are Jesuit and that is very indicative of the style of education received in the 28 Jesuit institutions) opportunities at public schools many families have no choice but to go public.

I grew up in the car business.  Dad was an Oldsmobile and Chevrolet (no Chevy nonsense for me) dealer and always said there was a butt (cleaned it up) for every seat.  The same can be said for the college.  There is a seat for every butt!  We just need them to send in their deposit and commit for next fall.

Sorry – here I go getting sidetracked again!  The big bucks have never been important to me – good thing, too.  I call private school college athletics my get rich slow scheme!  Here is why I get paid the medium bucks:

  • I am psychic – I can read the minds of the Athletic Director, the Controller, the Coaches and the Janitor
  • I am a superhero – I can be more than one place at a time (no phone booth required)
  • I can print money – what better way to balance the budgets?
  • I can influence vendors to ship and bill in a timely fashion.  You would think they would be begging for their money, wouldn’t you?
  • I can have 15 windows open on my computer at any one time and know where I am with each one.  This is actually true – I wanted to throw one legit one in here!
  • I can spin 8 plates on sticks and not have a single one crash to the ground (not true, either, but if  you read my blog you know I’m obsessed with these spinning plates)

In spite of all of this I really do love my job.  Each year end is like a puzzle with the corners and inside changing each time.  I have two weeks to “make it work” (also obsessed with Tim Gunn and Project Runway) and I am up to the task.

Until next time!
